Shemeem Burney Abbas is currently Associate Professor of Political Science and Gender Studies at the State University of New York at Purchase College. She was Professor of English Language and Applied Linguistics at the Open University in Islamabad, Pakistan, and worked there from 1981 to 2000. Abbas is the author of The Female Voice in Sufi Ritual: Devotional Practices of Pakistan and India. Elizabeth Warnock Fernea (1927-2008) was Professor of Comparative Literature and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Texas at Austin.
