Dick Lester's Three and Four Musketeers films both make my personal "Top Ten films of all time". I love history and historical adventure, and no one has ever done it better than these two magnificent films. The Four Musketeers, subtitled "Milady's revenge", is a rather darker film than the glorious, hilarious romp of the Three Musketeers. Now things start to go wrong for D'Artagnan and his three companions. Athos' dark secret emerges; that the evil Milady is actually his estranged wife, and we see at last the reason for his cynical and drink-sodden ways, he is actually in agony for his lost love. Milady, seething at her defeat in the first film, now seeks the death of those responsible, whilst also engaged on a murderous campaign against the English Duke of Buckingham, seen by the Cardinal Richlieu as a threat to France. Needless to say, the four Musketeers battle to oppose her, and a thrilling struggle ensues. Without giving the whole story away, suffice to say the heroes do not have it all their own way this time around, and suffer grievious losses, before eventually triumphing (as heroes always should!) There is still great humour in this film, and the slapstick and fights are as superb as in the first film. Taken together, they are as good as any historical adventure films ever made. No other film version of the Musketeers has ever come close as being as good.Read full review
This movie is excellent. The Four Musketeers, along with the first movie, are the only movie versions that are remotely accurate to Alexandre Dumas's masterpiece novel, The Three Musketeers. The action and sword fighting in this film are great. They only add to a great story, and don't try to make up for a poor one.
