This book is an absolute MUST particularly for the amateur gardener. Everything is explained step by step. It is also a good reference book for those who consider themselves 'green fingered' or to be a more advanced gardener. I really like the easy layout of the book which is full of pictures, diagrams and even garden layouts. Advice on what to do in the garden each month of the year; when to plant, what to plant, when and how to prune etc. I first purchased this book in 1977 through Readers Digest and used it consistently over the years. However 2 years ago in the course of moving house I gave it away to a charity shop thinking I didn't need it anymore. Wrong! I referred to other gardening books but found nothing to match its diversity and was very happy when I found another copy. I shall not be parting with this one.Read full review

This is a book that has had several up-dates and re-prints since the 1960's, but the basic information is so good that even my original copy is still full of current garden techniques. I bought this latest copy second-hand, as a present for a new gardener, but if you can find and can afford a brand new copy it will become the1st "go to" book for any gardening query. I've been gardening since I was a child seventy years ago, and I still refer to it for reminders of when, or how, to do things - like pruning apple trees, or clematis, or lists of plants happiest in certain soil conditions. Each month it has reminders of jobs to do, depending on where in the British Isles you live. This is the only information not totally current, as the effects of global warming have not been taken into account. Since most new gardening books don't allow for this either, I don't hesitate to say that if you go by the book you will be a successful gardener.Read full review

This book is a Godsend to me.It lays out just what needs doing in the garden ,when and how to do it and on a month by month format. The information is readily understandable and the drawings are very helpful,as are the photographs. You can plan a new flower bed,or even a whole new garden using this book and it deals with ponds too.To my mind it is a really good all round source of information. This is my second copy, the first having been used for many years and then lent out never to have been returned,so I was exyremely happy to be able to purchase another.Highly recommended for new gardeners especially, but the many tips prove helpful even to established gardeners.

I bought this for my son who has just moved into a house with a large garden. Luckily the garden is well stocked but with plants he does not recognise so he is finding this book very helpful. I bought this book for myself many moons ago!
