These are fantastic books, very different from the usual. They contain lots of humour, cliff edge drama, crazy characters and they even teach too!
Having escaped Mortmain Mountains by tobogganing down the Stricken Stream but losing Quigley in the process, the siblings find themselves in the Queequeg, captained by Captain Widdershins and his step-daughter Fiona, hunting for the mysterious sugar bowl. Why they do not know but with the help of Widdershins and Fiona and their tidal charts and submarine the siblings find themselves in the Gorgonian Grotto surrounded by the deadly Medusoid Mycelium. After which things only go from worse to worse as Olaf makes his customary appearance at precisely at the worse possible moment. As the Baudelaires desperately try to escape, save their sister and make a very important rendezvous we discover yet more mysteries to solve and find out some very important information about the crew of the Queequeg and the history of the VFD. As the Baudelaires continue their journey we also find out more about our narrator and his own involvements in this unfortunate story which adds further to the mystery of the VFD. Darkly humourous with Snicket's superbly balanced practical pessimism and cautious optimism, this is another superb addition to this fantastic seriesRead full review
