The master writer of his generation.
My only regret is that the entire series had not been written in the 1960s. Apart from wishing for the impossible, each book overlaps the ongoing narrative. You, the reader, are drawn into another world full of danger and treachery - have things changed? To say each story is erudite and authentic is of course something of an understatement. I cannot quote any other writer who matches O Brian for his handling and understanding of a vanished age. I am not even sure how he achieved this except to include (as he admits) passages or excerpts from contemporary accounts and memoirs. I don't think this is a wrong move but rather it pinpoints the closeness of what took place rather than creating a fictional account, page after page. We are invisible observers aboard the ship but we must not be in the way as the company set about their daily tasks. We moveRead full review

You must start from vol 1. All full of gritty action. Why has only one made into a film.Russell Crowe was ideal but Stephen was not.

Reading this is the beginning of a new adventure.
I couldn't put the book down. Patrick O'Obrian draws the reader in to a different world - the characters are totally believable and his portrail of life on board a man of war is an insight into a totally new world. Since reading this I have bought and am reading all the books in the Jack Aubrey series and will feel enriched when I've read them and dejected when there are no more to read.
