Glad I stumbled across this little known film ...
It read "one of the most outstanding movies of the year" but I had not heard of it. The film is about the break-up of a marriage and a family. The acting is wonderful. Jesse Eisenberg excels.

The Squid and the Whale
Bittersweet comedy about a coming-of-age teenager whose parents, both writers, are divorcing. The Dad, an arrogant, intellectual snob, is well played by Jeff Daniels. The great Laura Linney is the Mom, whose sex life tends to be on the frisky side. A very honest, very believable look at the reality of a failing relationship.
Divorce for the cerebral, a winner
For anyone connected to a divorce situation, in anyway, this is a must see. It eloquently dramatises the problems children face whilst going through a divorce. It makes you care about the characters and tells the story well. Perhaps the two most important factors in a good movie
Dad, whats a philistine?
This is a good funny film. A gentle comedy. Following the initially amicable and sensible seperation of a married couple and watching the subsequent detrius of the split; the family falling apart, the couples children going off the rails, the failure of the man of the house to go it alone, the inevitable introduction of new partners. Really it should all make uncomfortable watching but, because it never loses it sense of humanity and wry observation, it doesn't. This is simply an intelligent comic film that just meanders along slowly. Jeff Daniels is brilliant. His understated performance as the often arrogant pompous father is a joy, and he is ably supported on all sides by all of the cast. There isnt a duff act amoungst them. A film well worthy of a viewing.
