This was the first album I ever bought... 32 years ago in 1977. I ...grew up with The Stranglers and they'll always be the band that others have to be compared to. Having said that, I actually haven't listened to many of the original albums for the past few years. It was time to catch up with the latest editions including all the b-sides. This is, again, the first one of the half-dozen United Artists/EMI Stranglers albums that I've bought. It's a marvellous, serious album - probably not as good as Rattus Norvegicus or The Raven, but it reverberates with the sound of a band with so many great songs that they could rattle off recording this amazing collection in about a fortnight. CD compilation and sound quality are just excellent. Controlled aggression and genuine musical ability - a weird and wonderful landmark band.
No More Heroes is the Stranglers Punk masterpiece and is as... important as 'Never mind the Bollocks' in defining the genre. This was an extremley offensive album predating gangsta rap stars 'NWA' who would go on to create similar offensive lyrics, but the Stranglers did it first with songs such as 'I feel like a Wog','School Mam' and 'Bring on the Nubiles. Essential listening.
