There are probably one or two various Wurzels' compilation CDs available but overall this has to be the best. It has twenty-four tracks going right back to the early days of Adge Cutler (Drink up Thy Zider) and coming up as far recent as the 2001 remix of Combine Harvester. The original 1976 no1 hit is featured too, as is I am a Cider Drinker. The lyrics should be listened to very carefully as there are some rather amusing anecdotes such as the tale of Lucy Bailey (Twice Daily). I found some of the titles just as amusing, such as 'Down at Nempnett Thrubwell' and the utterly nonsensical 'Wurple-Diddle-I-Do song' (Try pronouncing those when you've had a few pints of Scrumpy). To put you in the picture there is also a booklet included which gives a potted history of the Wurzels, from when Adge started it all in the '60s, where his inspiration came from and leading through to his tragic death in 1974, the band's decision to continue which led the their No1 hit 'Combine Harvester' and their continued success since. It's nice to know they're still on the go today. Adge would have been proud. I first heard of them when I was in my early teens, when that certain No1 hit was released. I bought the single and wore it down (as old vinyl does). Then the years pass by and last year a mate of mine started singing it on Karaoke (he still does). In fact he's Wurzelised other songs too. His missus bought him it for his birthday and after a bit of "ooarring" I thought "I've got to have this". And that's what rejuvenated my interest in the Wurzels. Back to the CD. As with all CDs you can't cram everything on one disc and the only ones missing are the likes of 'Eddie Stobart Driver', 'Ooarr just a little bit', 'Don't look back in anger' and 'I hate JR' etc (you could always buy another CD or download them) but the collection is none the worse for that. All in all I'm pleased I bought 'The Finest 'arvest of the Wurzels' and if you've never heard all of their songs before but are interested then this is the ultimate starting point. From theironin, I promised you'll be hooked. "Proper Job", as the Lads would say.Read full review
