The way the cine films ( one hundred years old!) of the First World War are brought to life is amazing. The scratches are removed as if by magic, colour is added and lip sync dialogue seems extraordinary. I watched an interview with the maker of the film that added lots of useful background information. If you watch it on DVD have a look at this extra feature FIRST, then see the film itself.

Firstly, I would say ...that the colourising of the old black and white film was impressive and that the subject is one that will always be worthy of time spent in reflection and giving respect to those who went to France and Belgium and had to experience the war there first hand. I have to say however, that I think the BBC did a slightly better job in 1966, in terms of a series they produced then on the same subject, the crucial difference being that back then when the old soldiers and gave their recollections, they were actually shown on film, which I thought was much more powerful than what Jackson did in just having the audio of the voices in the background of other film. I also felt after about an hour of seeing wounded, injured and/or dead soldiers. I had enough.............it was at that point I turned it off!

It shows just how horrible the first World War... was and the carnage is vividly shown due to the excellent colorization of the old black and white film. The story is told by recordings of the men voices, well matched with their moving lips in the film. Two things that stand out are the song Mademoiselle from Armentieres with its 30 odd verses and the last mans voice on the DVD which said that when he returned to his old place of employment, the man at stores hatch when he went for some tools, said "Where have you been - On nights?!"

I bought this film for a 90 year old friend of mine who f...ought in the first world war, I myself saw it on tv so i told him about it. He liked the film and also it brought back lots of memories. There are some gory scenes but otherwise entertaining. And it is very well made from old footage.
