I've been looking for a decent DX ultra wide angle to use on my back up camera and the most popular choices seem to be either the sigma 10-20mm, Nikon 10-24mm or the Tamrom 10-24. I've tried all of them but the only one that really impressed me was the Nikon which I couldn't find in the price range I wanted to pay. I looked a bit further and started reading great reviews on the Tokina 12-24mm. I took the plunge and found one in mint condition on ebay for a knock down price - and I haven't been disappointed. The build quality is superb and inspires confidence before it's even attached the the camera! The image quality is equally good with great, sharp, contrasty results. I was a bit worried that with the bulbous front element lens flare would cause problems but, compared to my Sigma 12-24m, it performs well above the expectations for this type of lens. Although it only goes to 12mm at its widest, for my purposes at weddings and for large groups, I don't find it limiting and distortion seems to be well controlled. Landscape toggers would probably want more but, if you're not fussed about losing the extra 2mm, this is more than outweighed by the sheer class of the lens, and the additional 4mm at the other end of the scale makes it a lot more useful to me than the siggy 10-20mm. Bottom line, if you want an ultra wide angle but don't mind losing the extra 2mm at the wide end, I would recommend this over all of the other popular DX lens choices in the price range, including the Nikon 10-24mm. The build quality is superb and the final results speak for themselvesRead full review
Got this product for £80, it's sharp enough for me. AF - MF switch is clever. Filter thread 77mm, very large but essential. No IS needed, lens is heavy enough. AF fast enough in bright light.

I wanted a wide angle lens for my Nikon D2Xs. Saw the price of the Nikon lens (enough said), and read reviews on TamRon, Sigma, even looked at the Samyang. The reviews I read we're all in favour of this Tokina, even rating it as a match for the Nikon. I bought it on EBay, and have given it a thorough testing......they were right! The lens is smooth, has a great zoom range for wide angles and is built like a tank. I reckon it is nigh-on indestructible. I particularly like the ease with which you can change from auto focus to manual, by simply sliding the collar forwards or back. So simple and effective. All in all, I rate this lens 5 stars for both quality and performance.
