I believe having free time and the owners manual is the key to using this product if you do not have experience with electronic entertainment etc once read use makes more sense and becomes easier. It helps also to have the manual for you TV. I am pleased with this product.

Having nought one of these new back in 2010 it worked great for the first year, then the problems started---clicking turning itself off, sorted that out faulty diode, then hard drive would nor record, replaced that, then the VCR side packed in, dirty mode switch which when taken apart is a pain in the neck to get back together correctly. I can understand all this if it was used constantly but only ever recorder the odd programme when Sky box couldn't and only used the VCR and DVD to transfer a few tapes to keep them good, the worst problem for me is the fan noise when you leave it in standby ready to record. it seemed a good idea to have all 3 products in one but now it seems not such a good idea and have now bought a DVD with hard drive and just hook up a VHS player when needed much better no more messing about trying to fix the dreaded black Toshiba box so buyer beware !! trouble ahead--- that's why they don't sell new ones anymoreRead full review

A brilliant machine, records on HDD/VHS/DVD, with a time slip facility if you want it. I mainly record onto HDD, no tapes or discs to mess with but if you want to take recordings elsewhere then just record direct onto tape/disc, or download from HDD onto one of those. Due to the upscaling built in it makes the picture sharper. I highly recommend it. This is the second one I have at home and have also bought one on behalf of my mother-in-law. [all slightly different model numbers but with the same facilities].
I bought this to replace a Samsung DVD Recorder which my wife found very complex to operate. She has found the Toshiba much easier to operate and with a a Video player/recorder as well we have been able to dispense with two pieces of equipment so have saved some space. Lots of functions on the Toshiba, most of which we will probably never need but I would strongly recommend this model for ease of operation. A good buy and a very good price.
Unfortunately the dvd recorder broke down after only two weeks of use ( switched itself off seconds after being switched on). I have read some reports on the net of other people having had the same problem. I got an instant refund from the vendor, so can't complain there. Having said all that, this is the second of these units I have bought. The first one (now two years old) is still performing well. The manual is poorly written, but the basic operations are fairly easy to master. Editing, dubbing etc. took a bit more time and trial and error to get to grips with. In summary this is a competent machine, but I wouldn't recommend it because of the reliability issue.
