"Aliens have Landed".I caught... up with the top secret mission of SHADO sometime in the 70s and was immediately hooked. Aside from a few episodes of Dr Who I can't think of any other TV show that so captivated, excited and fired my imagination like UFO. I bought both series on DVD (Vols 1 to 4 and Vols 5 to 8)having seen a couple of episodes on satellite TV and I'm pleased I did. So is my son. The episodes of the second series have storylines dealing with more adult themes such as adultery, drug taking and psychological breakdown and manipulation(in addition to wrestling with aliens and blowing their spacecraft to bits) and so may not be suitable for younger children although the UK certificate rating is only 12. It's been said that UFO looks quite dated today but I'd say it probably looked more dated in 1980, the year in which the concept is set. Yes, many of the gadgets and fashions look 60s/70s but many of these wouldn't look out of place in 2008, with the penchant for the mode of those decades so it still looks fresh today. There are of course many ways in which the years haven't been so kind and rightly so in the case of the cigarette and cigar smoking but UFO is full of action, well acted by the regulars, with great storylines, terrific (if a little cheesy?) music (but the exciting theme tune is quite brilliant and I'll never tire of it) UFO has a depth and believability lacking from similar shows before or since. I recommend UFO. Whatever "edition" or Volume set you can get your hands on. Still think it would make a great series of movies.
Pure nostalgia, the quality of acting may not have reached RSC... level and the script fared no better. The space theme at that time was massive, the yanks were still going to the moon ... Along come Gerry Anderson and Lew Grade with this masterpiece of sci-fi action ,much more fun than watching real men on the moon. A Magical blend of Thunderbird type models and human puppets... Gerry Anderson even made the actors wear puppet uniforms! The costumes, especially the girls ones were an absolute godsend for a 12 year old lad...the whole idea was completely brilliant and achieved with skill, imagination, and a miniscule budget...something many large studios with huge funds still fail miserably at...PLUS, IT WAS FUN ! The theme music was the epitome of the late swinging 60s scene, and the drummer lays down a classic groove.... swweeet ! ...I bought it because none of the cable tv channels are smart enough to run the show again.
This is a great box set as it is well recorded..., excellent sound and vision, well packaged and very good value for money. Now for the content: quite simply Sci-fi at its best, from the master of cult 60's marionette TV series Gerry Anderson. It's a shame he didn't try further real-life projects. Both cast and content are great. Each episode stands alone, often story-lined around one of the central characters. Made in the early 70's it was set as a vision for the year 1980 (little expecting to be still around in 2010's). Obviously fashions change and some sets are dated but why shouldn't it, after all, it is 40 years old. However, you can still watch it and think, this could be the future of things to come. If you're a fan of Sci-fi and haven't seen it yet, I thoroughly recommend it. This set (the complete 2nd series) is as strong as the first set with vols 1-4 (the first series). It's great value for money and I'm sure it will not disappoint. Compared to most box sets from the 70's this is as good as it gets. 5 star entertainment in my opinion.
