Under suspicion? Not my mum! :)
I bought this film because my mum recommended it. She was right. The story is not a fast-moving block buster it's a slow burning mystery. I feel it would be wrong to reveal too much about the story but suffice it to say it's principally about relationships between men and women and particularly older men and younger women. Gene Hackman plays the suspect whose wife suspects that he has dubious sexual preferences and this, along with other factors, leads him into problems with the police. Morgan Freeman plays the kind but sceptical cop and monica bellucci the alluring but troubled spouse. It is not a difficult film to read in terms of the outcome but the acting is brilliant and the conclusion doubly tragic. Go on watch it, you can trust my mum :)
Under Suspicion DVD 2001.
This DVD stars Morgan Freeman, and Gene Hackman. Both are superb actors and oscar winners as well!.The story: Hackman is a wealthy Lawyer who resides in Brazil. Two young girls are raped, and murdered and the Chief of Police (Freeman)is not satisfied with Hackman's alibi, and so takes him in for questioning. After a long interview Freeman is convinced that Hackman is guilty, and several unsavoury facts emerge regarding Chantel (Hackman's Wife) and his liking for young girls which makes freeman even more certain Hackman is guilty. I will not give any more of the plot away needless to say this is superbly acted, and there is also a good "Twist" at the end which I certainly didn't see coming. The DVD is extremely cheap(About£4.00) and is also plentiful so if you like great acting by fine actors, and a good storyline you will like this.Highly recommended!.Read full review
If you're going to deal with a challenging plot like child murders, you're going to need to build suspense and tension. I felt the movie failed to do this. Halfway through I wondered where it was going, and anticipated a revelation and plot twist. When the end came, it was a disappointment and there was little in the way of conclusions about the main characters or their relationships. The background (Puerto Rico) is magnificent, and the sense of community and tension between different sections came across. The social setting of the main characters was explained well, mainly through the interviews by the police on the main character. That, I felt, was thew limits of the success. I was suprised that Morgan Freeman ended up failing to shine (he always does) and put this down to limitations in the plot. It was originally a book, which gives more opportunity to go into the characters' minds and backgrounds, and it didn't make the transfer to the screen. OK film if you expect little, but there was little to stimulate or challenge my mind.Read full review
