As with Hastings’ treatise ...on The Korean War, this work is a detailed, well-balanced view of one of the great turning points in 20th Century history. It is written in a nicely flowing style with a blend of anecdotes from those in the thick of it as well as more formal narrative. It’s a good mix of political and military history with compassionate human interest stories thrown in for good measure. And it clearly highlights the failings on all sides rather than take a histrionic pop at what is already a discredited slice of American foreign policy. As Hastings posits, the real losers were the Vietnamese people - a situation they still find themselves in today. The only negative I can advise of is that it is impossible to finish this book without feeling a profound sense of sadness.

Bought for my husband for Christmas as he enjoys... historical non-fiction. He can't put it down! He was aware of many facts concerning the Vietnam conflict but this book goes back earlier in history and includes personal accounts. Max Hastings is an excellent author making for an informative interesting read.
