Only for certain movie buffs. Could be mega boring for most people.
I hadn't seen this movie for more than 20 years when I recently decided to obtain a cheap copy on ebay. I remember at the time, back in the 80's, I didn't think much of it. Mainly because I couldn't make head nor tail of it. I'm not the only one. Search reviews on IMDB and most reviewers agree on one thing. The whole film is hard to understand. Today I understand the film a bit better. The film suggests that the future of mankind is in the hands of a technocracy who aim to control the herd, known as 'brutals' in the film using exterminators who work on their behalf. Not a new concept it was tried by the Nazis during WW2 and is a topic covered in Aldous Huxley's Brave New World sci-fi novel. Sean Connery is a Brutal who finds himself in the world of the technocrats in a voyage of re-discovery. In trying to find out why he somehow converts the technocrats bored with the perfect commune they have created for themselves. There are a number of themes running through the movie which relates to the future of mankind. It looks fairly low budget but does have some fascinating imagery despite that. I'm not recommending the film but it will appeal to a minority whereas the majority simply wont get it or indeed want to get it because the message for the profane moviegoer paints quite a bleak future.Read full review
Zardoz starring Sean Connery
Zardoz is set in a post human society where certain elite sections of society have segregated themselves off from the rest of the human race [whom they call the Brutals] in "vortexes" which are areas of space time existing inside a "bubble" which cannot be penetrated by physical means. The elites control and experiment with the lives of the brutals as their Gods, but life inside the bubble has become intolerable, emotionless and sterile, with sub sections of the community going "Renegade" [insane] and also "apathetic" which induces a catatonic state. However when "Z" [Connery], a brutal, arrives at the vortex [due to an experiment by one of the elites gone awry] the Elites soon find the nature of the humanity they segregated themselves from seeding itself amongst their community with complex and disastrous effects. This film works on so many levels, definitely a film you should see before you die.Read full review
Amazing dystopian fantasy, starring Sean Connery in a red loincloth. Well worth a look. Directed by John Boorman and set in the 23rd Century. One of those films you might have seen on BBC2 late at night after the pub and stayed up to see in a slight alcoholic haze.IF you like Dark Star and films of this period, you will love this.
i just love this retro movie, i saw it, saw the price and had to have it!!!i love this film because it is simply beautiful! Based on the wizard of oz, iuts a sexual sci-fi take on this literal classic. Made in the 70's this movie is definately ahead of it's time
