Fiskars X27 Heavy Duty Splitting Axe XXL

I was recommended this product by a friend who splits a lot more firewood than I do. He also urged me to get the XXL length rather than the XL to avoid whacking my own shins at the end of one's swing arc (I am 180cm tall with average arm length). Its first task was to reduce a very mixed pile of coarsely cut wood, both greenish and well seasoned, to chunks suitable for my wood stoves. The X27 makes very light work of cured sections, but struggles to cope with wood that is the least bit green or with twisted grain, for example sections of Leyland cedar. It takes a knack to work this axe efficiently – a keen aim is more productive than brute strength. All that said, it's still far better than a splitting tool propelled by a heavy mallet. Especially since it doesn't get hopelessly stuck in a log – it can be fairly easily prised out if necessary. Build quality, as you would expect with a Finnish steel head and an unsnappable handle, is excellent.Read full review

Perfect splitting axe

I did a lot of research into splitting axes and mauls and Fiskars products consistently were the ones people seemed to rate the highest.
However, there is no magic one tool does everything. There are similarly designed splitting axes from other brands. And the Fiskars axe comes in two sizes. This, the X27, is the larger (longer) one. I'm not tall nor built like a rugby player and would say this is the length most people would need to chop and split wood. If you buy the shorter version you will need a raised chopping block and if you miss strike be careful where the axe is heading for! Longer is safer. It feels the perfect length for me.
It is light, well balanced and easy to control. I overshot my first attempt and it did not leave a mark on the shaft. The other similarly designed axes from other brands are even shorter than the next size down Fiskars product. Think I'll stick to this X27.
However, as I said. No one tool will do everything. This is perfect for splitting logs. Not for breaking up big rounds. For that you'll need a maul and I would highly recommend the Fiskars builders axe model 1020220.

By far the best axe i have ever used.

By far the best axe i have ever used. My woodsman was skeptical when his younger rope guy recommended this to me, questioning why the old tools are not considered to be good enough. I Agree in principle, but have to admit this is an acceptation to the rule. It's making light work of the 200 yr old ash tree felled with 400mm rounds. Working up to the bigger stuff. Traditional heavy axe "Splitting mauls" are generally a bad axe all round, heavy and blunt. But this thing has sone expert design behind it. The carbon handle goes easy on the shoulders after a day of splitting lumber too.Read full review

The best axe at the price point for chopping wood.

The Fiskars X27 is in my opinion the best Axe for somebody who wants to split firewood efficiently at an affordable price. It is light, powerful and, well quite simply is as good at anything I have tried at splitting wood. The best thing about this axe though is the weight, while other mauls may split an individual piece as well, after 20 minutes you will be exhausted. With this axe I can go on a lot longer, not saying it makes splitting wood easy, but certainly easier! Also what I love about the product is that I have found that because the angle between the head an the blade is quite large, it tends not to get stuck in the wood like many axes (which can take a while to clear and potentially cause injuries).
There will be some who want to spend 3 to 4 times the amount on a Swedish axe, and I am definitely not saying these are not great Axes, of course they are. And if owning a finely crafted axe is important and you can afford it, then go for it. But for me my aim was to split wood and I find the X27 compares with even the most expensive of axes. There will be others that think the X27 is still a lot for an axe, and yes there are some very decent axes out there for a lower price. In my experience these axes are not as good as an X27, but guess it depends on how long your will use the axe for.

Powerful and nicely balanced

I've used all sorts over the years to split wood, and this is the best product I have ever owned.
Possibly slightly too long handled for me, I might have been better getting the X25 for my build, but adjusting your stance soon overcomes this.
Splits new wood with ease, and the sharpener does keep the edge sharp, plus I even tried the knife function too on a kitchen knife to see how well it would work, and as with most Fiskars stuff it works extremely well.
Overall I am well pleased with this axe, and is so satisfying to use, I wonder why I never researched axes before and got one sooner.
Hope you enjoy using it too
Mike
PS Try and split tangentially to the rings, not perpendicular, and it'll make the job even easier.

Best splitting axe we have ever used

This is a superb splitting axe.
We have a wood fired range cooker and two woodburners & have burned a lot of wood over many years. Though it won't match a maul for really big/knotty stuff, it is the best splitting axe we have ever owned for pretty much everything else - we got through a big heap of 2ft diameter, 18" tall rounds (some quite knotty) in really quick time. My son loved it so much he was looking round for more to split after we'd finished
At around 6 ft, it suits my husband & son, but is a bit long for me at 5'5", & I have just ordered the X25 for myself

Fiskars axe & a lot of research

Bought this because I had a huge fir tree to remove & the roots were dulling everything I was trying to cut them with. The axe went through them no problem & went onto to split several rounds of logs & still does not need sharpening. The balance & weight are excellent as your not lifting a solid shaft & the shape of the head splits & then divides usually in the first swing. Accuracy is greatly improved because your not exhausted by lifting a traditional maul over your head so you get it on the second swing anyway. Good tool & should last a long long while.Read full review

Brilliant bit kit

Used all kind of axes over the years but Friskars axes are by far the best. Easy on the user, more performance with less effort. Only one small criticism pity wasn't a heavier one, same dimensions same design just a bit more weight would be great. πŸ‘ŒRead full review

Fiskars splitting axe

I have had several splitting axes over the years and this one is far superior in every way, throw all your others away and buy one. it almost never gets stuck in the timber making the job much quicker, it’s super lightweight for its size, I’m very happy and only wish I’d have bought one years agoRead full review

You get what you pay for

A quicker way to split your logs.
I prefer using this to manhandling logs onto a vertical 6 tonne log splitter. The maul is quicker and easier.
Although this is supposed to be Fiskars heaviest maul I would suggest they could market a maul head that weighs an additional kilo or so for people able to handle it. Only disappointment is that the end of the shaft is not capped and looks unfinished. Otherwise a quality product that feels right good to use. πŸ‘πŸ»Read full review
