Playing For Change

I learned of this album when I was writing an article on an event that was going to feature a screening of the film. I was loaned a reviewer copy of the film and was so impressed that I bought the CD.

For those who are not familiar with the project: The producers recorded a street musician playing "Stand By Me" and then took the instrumental track to musicians and choral groups in other parts of the United States and other parts of the world (South America, Europe, Africa and Asia) and asked them to play or sing along to it in their own style.

The CD and the film also include other examples of "world music" and illustrate the power of music to transcend linguistic, ethnic, religious and cultural barriers.

And it shows that "Stand By Me" sounds great in many many different styles and arrangements.

A great buy for almost anyone with an interest in "world music" or the power of music.Read full review...
