Broken phones are suprisingly useful

It was cheaper to buy a whole phone than to buy spares individually. This one cost me £1 plus £3 postage. I managed to swap the keyboard very easily, and the LCD is easily changed.

The joystick is not easy to change, as it is soldered to the PCB and sits between two metal covers. It is hard to remove without damaging PCB tracks. I did it by firstly by removing as much solder as possible from the tabs north and south of the joystick using solder wick. The tabs can then be bent away from the PCB with a scalpel, though they did need heating. The electrical contacts (east and west) are trickier, and ideally need all solder joints melting at once. I applied a big blob of solder to each row of three contacts, melted one side and lifted it a bit. Then did the same to the other side. Then repeated these two steps until it came off. Each heating step has to be done briskly, to avoid melting the plastic. Do not be tempted to apply too much force as this will lift pads off the PCB. If it isn't loose, not all the joints are molten and you will be pulling a PCB pad.

I managed to remove it from the donor phone without damage, and only lifted on PCB pad on the recipient phone. Fortunately it was not too hard to find where the pad was meant to connect to, and I joined this to the pad with a fine wire.

With hindsight, it would have been better to use two soldering irons to melt both contact rows at once. I have electronic technician skills and this helped.

In short, changing keypads and LCD is easy, changing joystick switch is not.

As a bonus, I now have the leftover phone that I can use as a battery charger, and a spare LCD and camera module.

The donor phone problem seems to be a dead battery, so I could have simply moved my battery and SIM over if it had not been locked to a different network.

Budget handset, suitable only to get in touch, not for advance users.

We bought this handset really just to be able to get in touch. It is normally more basic that present models. It has got a weak camera, battery life is average, unfortunately very poor settings for various ring tones,or display themes, etc. The small and compact size makes it ideal to keep even in a small shirt pocket.Since the price says it all, this phone is good to get in touch, but not to browse the web, send emails or take good quality photos.Below average product.Read full review...

Sony Ericsson T610 Mobile Phone

I have had my trusty T610 for some time now. Yes, I know , it isn't state-of-the-art bleeping and blooping, but it's a solid little phone that does exactly what it says on the metaphorically cliched tin: sends messages, takes calls and has a reliable basic camera should one so desire (personally, I use a camera to take photos, call me old-fashioned).
I needed a back-up spare in case the battery started to die on the old one, so I decided to buy another. That will keep me happily making calls and messaging for the next year or so. And I've been so economical I can spend money on all the other brilliant bargains on e-bay without a twinge of conscience. Hold the phone!- or, better still, buy a second-hand classic like this one. Marvellous.

Sony Ericsson T610

I want simple mobile phone and this is a good choice. It is small easy to use. It is more than enough for mobile phone. Most of all the design is simple. Battery life should be improved though.
