A very readable, very personal war experience.
This is a fascinating story of a ship at war. Yes, Dido was one of many in the theatres in which she served, but Mr. Jeffs recounts the personal in the context of the world shaking events going on around him. This he does with a combination of humour, and careful respect for those of his colleagues who did not return with great skill. He relates his tale with a consummate restraint, telling it 'as it was'. At a very personal level, this book fills a number of blanks. My father served as an artificer on Dido at the same time as Mr. Jeffs. As a child I was not interested in my father's naval experiences - a common reaction. He referred to certain incidents on which Mr. Jeffs expands. Frustratingly Mr. Jeffs recounts how he was married in September 1944, when the ship was having major overhaul. Mr parents were married in September 1944. Even more frustrating, the photograph of Mr. Jeffs bears an uncanny likeness to the Best Man in my parents' wedding photo. Without my parents around to consult, this is a mystery yet to be solved!! A gem of book.

A light under a bushel
This is a story of a relatively unknown first rate entertainer in her own rite married to a well-known entertainer. Perhaps the association is Scottish, in terms of fame, but Mary Lee worked with top, internationally known bandleaders, and had a career in the USA. These little gems are well worth reading!
