Super Specs but durability doubtful
I eventually bought one because of the much hyped specifications and it's low-light capabilities to cart around as a second camera. Despite its much higher price on the High street it is quite hard to find so I hadn't seen one.As soon as I received it I had doubts about its build-quality. I bought my wife a lower spec and simpler Olympus at 2/3 of the price and frankly it not only does just as well (save in very low light perhaps) but looks far better built. I know she'll be able to just carry it around anywhere in its case and it will stand up to it. The F30 looks disappointingly plasticky and I soon missed not having a viewfinder when it came to bright sunlight. My first digital camera was a Fuji and both that was and my sons' models (both 2-3 years old) are much more solidly made and have stood up to pre-teen and teen use. The other disadvantage is having to take the camera out of use to re-charge it unless you by an optional extra charger and extra battery. The other digitals we have either use AA's or Li-Ion batteries. The F30 now has a new home

Very good quality
Whilst this might seem rather expensive It is way better quality than anything else on offer and it is extendable. Bought one and upon arrival bought 2 more. Now we may replace all our old ones because this is a really superior product.

Excellent bridging camera, just a little bulky perhaps.
I have to confess to being an Olympus fan. I still have an OM 1 SLR in the cupboard. It is early days yet but clearly the 570 is a major step up from my SP-510 (which had replaced my trusty Camedia C-5000) plus an amazing zoom. First we have a much better, clearer screen with a sharper image and no more purple stripes in bright reflected sunlight. The diopter and EV adjustment on the viewfinder are good touches - the only disappointment seems to its fine gridlines which aren't so important but I actually preferred the clarity of the viewfinder of the 510 but that is all. The major obvious improvements are in start-up, shutter delay in low light of course the more flexible lense and immediately noticeable superior quality pictures which are more easily attainable with less faff. Until now in some ways despite its small screen, I had been missing the good value package of the C-5000 with its optical viewfinder its only downside being having to delve into the Menu for nearly everything. Yes once hacked the 510 could produce some really excellent pics. I got some great 'unnoticed' close-ups and some amazing night shots but it took a lot of learning and work otherwise get it wrong and it was dire. My early Auto indoor shots had been dreadful. One reason why for happy snaps, I bought a slip in your pocket Canon Ixus 70 which does nearly as well, has FD and does it all with less hassle. It's a big step up with the 570. This a camera you really want to carry around - it is much easier to produce good shots without trying and is far more user-friendly plus the features you need most often have been brought out of the menu. I'm looking forward to being much more ambitious with it. Despite its bigger size, it has an excellent grip and only appears marginally heavier in a bag though on paper it is 100 gms heavier than the 510. I've seen criticism of the 'notchy' electronic zoom which mimics DSLRs. Well I quickly got used to using it and I find it a great deal more accurate than the lever type zooms of compact cameras. And here is a major advance. Perhaps some technophobes might fall over but Olympus have scrapped the CD Rom Manual. They supply instead, wait for it, yes a full compact printed manual with everything you need in, yes, readable print. With this new invention, no more switching on the PC, you can look things up instantly wherever you are. And what's more it's 100% in English , not 27 other languages. Why I bought the camera is simple. We all started digital life with XD cards, owning early digital Fujis when they were still properly made (my young son still has a 2MP one and gets great results despite the tiny screen) plus I'm used to the Olympus system. The equivalent camera in Fuji looked very plasticky, cheap and not very durable. Ok there are Panasonics out there but they do Hi-Fi's and TV's and have to borrow lenses from Leica. Olympus have always made cameras- plus by the very fact I had to bid numerous times to get a 570 at all demonstrated that this time Olympus had got it much closer to right. From what I can see this camera does more and produces better results than an entry-level DSLR without the bulky extras. It's early days so far but my only gripe is that being that bit bigger, it just won't fit my 510 cases so I've had to get new ones. Anybody you see advertising cases to fit 510 - 570 watch out. If you want to carry spare batteries, a Hana Trackpack DV36 is the one.
