Vibrant Revival!
Creedence Clearwater Revival were the best selling American singles band at the end of the 1960s. In the Uk they had a number one in '69 with "Bad Moon Rising" and top 10 entries with "Proud Mary", Travelin' Band" and "Up Around the Bend" The man who wrote, sang and played everything but rhythm, bass and drums on all of those records: JOHN FOGERTY. A name, which seemed unfamiliar to the casual record buyer and which, sadly, following his bands' demise in 1972,was soon overlooked by the majority. Fogerty's post Creedence "solo" efforts didn't help. They were sporadic and patchy, often with a decade or more between them, as he became embroiled in disputes with his former record company and band members leading to personal bitterness that has taken him the best part of 35 years to overcome. Now he's back and this is the best and most consistent album he has made under his own name. "Revival" see's a 62 year old man revisiting the style and sound that took him to the top of almost every music chart in the world 37 years ago. It's a return die- hard supporters thought they would never see. He's also touring across the globe to promote his new music and the concerts, featuring the fabulous CREEDENCE back catalogue after all these years, together with the best of this new album, are receiving great critical acclaim. Fogerty recreates the CCR sound of "Green River" in the aptly named "Creedence Song" "I can't take it no more" offers a further burst of "Fortunate Son" anger in less than 2 minutes! Linked with one of the best songs, "Long Dark Night", it updates his anti war and anti US republican stance. Further anger is poured out on America's dysfunctional society where he considers "I think we need a gunslinger" Here he develops the CCR country rock style and builds in more of an Eagles melody. One or two tracks, especially "It Aint Right" sound like they could have made CCR'S best selling "Cosmo's Factory" from 1970. For the first time here, Fogerty's band work together to recreate the overall Creedence sound which on past recordings they have failed to do. Is it essential music? For anyone under 30 probably not. It's not an innovative new style, but it IS Fogerty offering some more of what made him great in the first place and for those of us for whom Creedence was over far too quickly,an absolute joy. Is this a true "revival"? Age isn't on his side, but we can be grateful for this fantastic return to form. A major rebirth has taken place!
