BoomBar 2 Portable Rechargeable Stereo Bluetooth Sound System
    12 Aug, 2016
OK Sound. Good at the discounted price, not worth full price
I bought this for use in my campervan as I thought it would be good for a small space and could be tucked away easily and charged on the USB ports in the van. I purchased it at a vastly discounted rate as a pre-returned 'new' item. At first I was disappointed in the sound quality as it completely lacks bass and distorted very easily indeed, even at low volumes. I also felt the stereo separation was quite narrow. However I read elsewhere that this unit takes time to 'loosen up' and indeed after using it for some time I felt that the bass became a bit more powerful and I felt that the distortion lessened. So here's what I've discovered. It works exceptionally well for certain types of music - folk, electronica, ambient, country, classical.. things that don't saturate the speaker. However any kind of dance, metal or otherwise 'loud' music sounds very muddy indeed and lacks definition. You have to turn the bass up on the source device to get any power out of the speaker, and you have to be very careful otherwise you just get a wall of distortion and crackling even at low volumes. For decent separation you have to have the device very close to you. Thankfully my van is very small and I just stick it on the back of the seat where it produces a fine sound. Other things - the battery lasts forever. I charge it once a week off the leisure battery in the van and it just keeps going. It's nice and light, tidy and portable, very clean and neat looking. The blinking blue light really annoys me as when I have the curtains closed it fills the entire van with flashing blue light. Also, the combined volume and skip controls are a real fiddle and I deliberately never use them. So does it do the job? Yes.. with lots of fiddling with the EQ on your source device and with limits on your expectations. It is after all a very small speaker. Would I pay full price for it? Not at all. At the discounted rate I feel it's good value, but if it had cost any more I would have returned it as being not up to standard.
