BRIDGE OF SPIES - DVD FILM
    17 Aug, 2016
    Bridge of Spies DVD
A slick Spielberg retelling of a tense period in Soviet American relations. Everything in this film is tried and tested, from the cast of notables to the direction, costume, pacing and stylish cinematography. But does this make for a good viewing experience? Yes, though it's an average film and pretty unmemorable. Mark Rylance seems underused, with his range of expression being typically minimal. Tom Hanks is just Tom Hanks. Don't pay too much for this as you're not likely to watch it twice.

    A Golden Oldie
Having now owned a second-hand HP EliteBook 8730w for a couple of months, I feel i can now give a reasonable review. First of all, this laptop is from 2009, so old by computing standards. While the Core 2 Duo processor is still fast, the technology has moved on in other ways. The screen, for instance is somewhat dim compared to more recent LCDs. The viewing angle is a little limited, too. You can get screen replacements for about £50 but only on a like for like basis; the newer IPS LCD screens would not be compatible. This is true of nearly everything about owning an older laptop as opposed to owning a desktop: you cannot really change out the components very much. Not that this is huge issue anyway as the spec is generally very capable - perhaps you just need to be extra selective when purchasing your machine in the first place. You can of course replace the hard disk drive for a more modern SSD, and more memory can be added (up to 8GB). Performance is already pretty slick though just with 4GB and a basic hard disk. Overall, I am pleased with this laptop. The keyboard is spacious and good quality, there are plenty of USBs (4) as well as a built in SD memory card reader, it runs Windows 10 without any issues, image processing in Photoshop is fairly rapid and the internet experience is as good as any modern device i've used. This laptop stands up, even today. I bought my unit for £170. It needed a little cosmetic attention, but there are lots of spare parts available, so not an issue. If, like me, you don't want to spend very much, an older machine like this, can be a good solution, just remember that you are buying technology from 2009 (albeit one of the best machines of its day - around the £2000 mark originally).
