Every music lover should at least have an Aune X1S and a decent set of cans
1 of 1 found this helpful Over the years, I have had all sorts of hifi dacs, headphones, headphone amplifiers and other assorted hifi gear.
Honestly, you're going to have to spend a lot more money than the £200 buying price of this to get any meaningful sonic gains over this USB dac / headphone amp combo.
It's pros:
* Both DAC and the headphone amplifier sound superb.
* Headphone amplifier is fairly powerful despite what others might say. My Hifiman 400i planar headphones are very greedy but I don't need to turn the volume pot beyond 11 o-clock.
* Using your PC / MAC as a file source, it is easy to playback hi-res audio
* Build quality is top notch. My last Aune X1 performed flawlessly for 4 years
* Comes with a really high quality power supply (not like those nasty sounding, anemic, weak USB powered DACS)
* Design is awesome. Both silver and black are very classy looking ;)
* Features very useful phono inputs for a second audio source such as a radio tuner
* Pretty much sonically neutral
Cons:
* Can not be used as a pre-amp unlike the X1 model before it
* Features an analogue volume control. Some might like a digital option ?
Overall, you simply can't really go wrong with this device

Good for Djs. Good for audiophiles. Good for HAM radio. Good for almost any other audio recording /archival need
1 of 1 found this helpful An oldie but a goody. Think of this as a much improved tape deck / DAT / minidisc / cd recorder with none of their downsides.
* Many, many input / output options both analogue and digital.
* Marantz analogue to digital converters are excellent sounding. Audio recorded from analogue sources such as radio or tapes or vinyl (through a dedicated pre-amp) sound pristine. Recordings can be monitored using the on-board headphone output (drives my Sennheiser HD25 headphones very well)
* Metering and setting levels is very easy.
* Excellent mic pre-amps.
* Can be powered by batteries for portable use
All in all, a totally professional, flexible recording solution. So much better than almost any other cheap recording solution.
