1997 RAV4 Not All SUVs Need To Be Huge
3 of 3 found this helpful I am writing a quick review on our 1997 RAV4 AWD 4 door. I speak from experience as we have owned this Toyota since 2000 when we purchased it with only 10k miles. Now eight years and 70k miles later, we have been very pleased with how well the RAVY as we call it has held up.
Interior seat fabric has held up very well. Dashboard is well thought out with controls easy to use. Rear Door is unfortunately the Japanese side and opens the wrong way. A minor problem. This 1997 model only has one cupholder.
Maintenance has been low overall. At 60k miles we have had to spend some money on a timing belt, water pump, and front struts. Do not overlook this. Rotating the tires is important as the front ones wear faster than the rears.
All power items such as the moonroof, power windows, door locks, and cruise control have worked flawlessly. I have owned other cars both domestic and european and cannot say the same thing.
The exhaust system heat shields have a habit of rattling due to their mounts rusting. A few properly placed large hose clamps will solve this problem.
Engine power with the automatic transmission and 4WD is just fair. On long hills the RAV4 will downshift and require some high revs to get to the top.
Four Wheel Drive performance in Connecticut snow is excellent. On par with Subaru.
I recommend this model but finding a good used one at a reasonable price is a challenge.

a cheap replacement
was able to get my troybilt lawn vacuum running properly again with the inexpensive replacement carburetor. Had both gaskets included and bolted right in.

works well but the setup was a bit confusing. Factory settings have a 2 degree offset so if you for example set the heat rise setting to 26 degrees, it won't actually activate until it reaches 28 degrees. Works fine. Thanks
