I think the title of the book is accurate and inviting
I bought this book because I love antiques.I have purchased a number of collectible items through Ebay recently and I want to use the book as a guide and a teacher in my future purchases.
On the pro side, I think the book has tons of information on antiques in general, and selective items in particular. There are several pages on early American furniture that I liked. For example, on pp 400 & 401, there are illustrations that highlight the various aspects of early furniture, like a Chippendale chest of drawers, a Mission oak Library Table, and various furniture pediments and skirts. Because I am a novice with limited knowledge about early furniture, I found this information very useful. The book also went into detail on early ceramics, much of which I had no knowledge.
On the con side, I was disappointed that there was little to very little information given about the items that I have an interest in and collect. For example, there are 17 pages of photos of tea pots and sets, but there was only 1 page about stoneware crocks, no information about Depression glass, but there are 12 pages about Carnival glass. The book seems to target antique collectors who are both knowledgable and wealthy.
All in all, however, I love the book, mainly because I gained knowledge about items I had no exposure to, such as early Roseville, Pheonix Bird, and Flying Turkey Porcelain, all of which are incredibly beautiful. I intend to have this book in hand every time I go antique shopping, whether online of on the road.
