Nice kit with one exception
Overall an interesting and straightforward kit with the high quality one would expect from Walthers. I gave it 4 stars based on one significant flaw. The steeply pitched roof for the main building is two pieces- not 4. The back of each piece is scored and the builder is expected to deepen the scoring, bend them to the proper angle then, "hold them in place until the glue dries". I gradually bent these over a period of 3 days and one snapped in two before it was even close to the proper angle for installation. That left an unsightly gap to fill and repaint.

Great loco in every respect!
Although MTH locos run on DC, we operate exclusively on DCC using an NCE system. The engine runs extremely smoothly in both directions, functions worked out-of-the-box and the Proto-3 sound is fantastic.
Although we haven't seriously tested its pulling power, it is die-cast (no plastic shell) so the weight of the loco is noticeably heavy which for sure enhances slow speed ops and should increase pulling power.
A significant improvement in the way the tender is electrically connected to the loco has been incorporated. Instead of a multi-wires plug attaching to the loco below the fireman's platform, there is a plug which attaches from the loco to the underside of the tender. Much easier to connect and disconnect than the design used by other manufacturers.
Quality of paint and detail is at least equivalent with higher-priced similar products.
