Salvador Dali is a familiar name to many. This Spanish Catalan painter was best known for his work in surrealism, particular his piece "Persistence of Time," which features melting clocks on a desert-like landscape. While perhaps many people do not fully understand his work, his paintings nonetheless have become popular among a variety of types of audiences.

Dali used symbolism frequently in his works, and science was a big influence. The melting clocks in his famous painting, for example, represent Einstein's theory of time as a relative—not fixed—concept. Although he was best known for his paintings, Dali also worked in other media, including sculpture, photography, architecture, and even theatre and film. Dali was a true visionary and his ideas were ahead of his time.
