About Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones, named after the first novel in the 'A Song of Ice and Fire' book series by George R.R. Martin, on which the show is based, has become one of HBO's most watched original series, and for good reason. It could be best summed up as a political drama set in a fantasy world of kings and dragons. However, since the fantasy elements are toned down so much that many refer to it as "historifiction" - an almost natural blend of arthurian legend and real world history - you don't have to be a fantasy fan to enjoy it. With all its stark plot twists, this brilliantly written show could keep just about anyone on the edge of their seat and gasping at the outcome of each episode. The story follows several extraordinary characters, including a man who would sacrifice his life for his honour, a ruthless queen that would sacrifice anything to hide her horrible secrets, a wise-cracking dwarf that turns the world on its head, and a castaway princess who fantasises about taking back her father's throne "with fire and blood." Everyone either has a trick up their sleeve or a knife in their back. There's one ruse after another. You'll never know what is going to happen or to whom. The characters are developed remarkably well and are so full of personality that it may be difficult to choose a favourite to side with. Fortunately, there are no heroes or villains, only winners or losers in the game of thrones. "When you play the game of thrones," says the ruthless queen, "you either win or you die."
