An iPod dock allows your iPod personal music player to be placed somewhere secure in order to recharge its battery, and in some cases also transforms it into a mini hi-fi system so that you can play your music aloud to guests, such as at a house party or other social gathering. This has the advantage that your iPod may be charging while playing - meaning the battery will not run out as long as it is properly seated in the dock.

The universal nature of the iPod dock connector means it may also feature in other places, such as on larger hi-fi systems and even in some vehicles to allow music to be played back from the iPod via the car's speaker system.
