About Star Wars Life Sizes

When the film Star Wars was released on May 25th, 1977, it brought to the screen a sub-genre which had previously been considered too expensive and lacking in commercial potential to bother with. Space opera or space fantasy had long been a staple of science fiction, incorporating futuristic settings with much loved adventure motifs, but the Hollywood studios thought its appeal to be limited. So it was that the original concept for what would turn out to be one of the most successful films of all time was turned down by Universal Studios when it was presented to them by the film director George Lucas in the early 70s. Lucas? ideas evolved over the next few years and it was the fourth draft of the script that went before the cameras in 1976 under the aegis of 20th Century Fox. Star Wars became a global phenomenon and its success allowed for two sequels released at three year intervals. The Empire Strikes Back came out in 1980 and Return of the Jedi in 1983. More than twenty years after the first film was released a second trilogy began hitting the cinemas. Chronologically, however, The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith were actually set before the original trilogy. In the decades since the massive success of the first Star Wars film the franchise has spawned a considerable amount of merchandising such as comic books, action figures, games and toys. One aspect of this has been the availability of life size figures of the characters from the films. These range from stand up cardboard cutouts to full size three dimensional full figures and busts and life size latex masks.
