About Sweeney Todd

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, is a musical horror film released to box-office 21st December, 2007, directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp in the title role alongside Helena Bonham Carter. Set in 19th century London, the film tells the story of Benjamin Barker (Johnny Depp), skilled barber who has been falsely charged of a crime and banished by a corrupt judge. Barker returns 15 years later to find that his wife had been raped by the same corrupt judge who has banished Todd's former self and the attack resulted in her suicide. Upon learning this and that his daughter was now in the lecherous clutches of his wife's attacker, Todd vows revenge as he embarks on a gruesome partnership of murder and the cannibalistic disposal of bodies via the medium of meat pies. The film is an adaptation of an award winning 1979 Broadway musical, which in turn was among many adaptations of a story first appearing in an 1846 Victorian penny dreadful entitled "The String of Pearls: A Romance". Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street has received mostly positive reviews and generally positive critical response. It won several awards including the 2007 Golden Globe award for Best Motion Picture in the category of Musical or Comedy and Best Actor in that same category for Johnny Depp's role in the film and an Academy Award for Best Art Direction. Critics also praise Depp's vocal talent despite some noting a lack of certain musical qualities. While the film itself may have been received widely positively, much criticism was levelled at the marketing of the film. Due to a down-playing of the film's score within the film's trailers, many movie-goers were unaware that the film was a musical and, in a few cases, walked out upon realising the film's musical nature!
