About The Hobbit

J.R.R. Tolkien's 1937 book comes to life in the 2012 film adaptation of the movie The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. This is the first in a three-part series directed by Academy Award winning director Peter Jackson. The sequels The Desolation of Smaug is to be released in 2013, and There and Back Again is to be released in 2014. The book The Hobbit was the predecessor of The Lord of the Rings, which covers the 60 years before as a set of prequels. Several actors will reprise their roles from The Lord of the Rings, so familiar faces abound in the first of this three-part trilogy. Set in the fictional world of Middle-earth, the three films follow the hobbit Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor and chosen by the wizard Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen), to accompany 13 dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) on a quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from the dragon Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch). Also, Cate Blanchett stars as Galadriel and Elijah Wood as Frodo. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Sorcerers. Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain, first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever, Gollum. He eventually gains possession of Gollum's "precious"; a simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.
