In optimum amounts, UV light is beneficial to the human body and humanity in general. Without it, we might all have died already from infection. The use of UV light for sun tanning remains controversial, but it does activate the production of Vitamin D, something housebound people need.

UV light is also used as an antiseptic in hospitals: shine it on surfaces and your hall table could be ready for surgery. It kills bacteria. Hang out the washing!
