About VW Touareg Propshaft
Volkswagen is a German car maker that has reputation for building high quality family cars and performance vehicles. The Touareg is a large 4x4 that came in to production in 2002 and has solid on and off road credentials. When looking to replace the prop shaft (also referred to as the drive shaft) it is important that you get the correct specification to fit the engine and model of your VW Touareg.
A prop shaft is the component that transfers the torque produced from the engine to the wheels. They vary in length depending on the distance between the engine and axles. They are tubular shaped shafts that typically connect to the transmission at one end and axles at the other, although configurations can vary. They use rotational force to carry the energy to the wheels and as a result must be strong enough to be able to cope with the stresses involved, yet light enough to prevent the build up of inertia.
The VW Touareg is a 4 wheel drive vehicle and has 2 prop shafts. One to send the torque to the front wheels, the other to the back. The split between the front and back will vary depending on the road and ground conditions and is controlled through the differential. The two prop shafts are different lengths, specifications and have different articulation so be sure to check which you need. Fitting the wrong prop shaft to either the front or rear can cause catastrophic failures in the drive train. The VW Touareg prop shafts are not bespoke products and have universal joints that enable them to fit some other vehicles.
