Established in 1978 by Richard and Lucille Lewin, Whistles started life as an independent boutique, before rapid success saw it turned into a well-known and widely recognised womenswear brand. In 2008, former Topshop director Jane Shepherdson purchased a 20 per cent stake in the company, and was also hired as chief executive; since then the clothes have become more contemporary, with cleaner lines and less fussy elements. Known best for their tailoring and vintage-style details, Whistles are now a world-famous brand that continues to grow year-on-year.
Whistles stock a wide range of womenswear, from beautiful classic tailoring to more eclectic and casual tunic dresses, knitwear and jersey tops. Simple lines and clean silhouettes are all constantly celebrated, with classic collar shirts easily combined with skinny cigarette pants or voluminous skater skirts, and a wide range of denim available to suit every size and shape. While the shapes are simple, the details are far more edgy; expect leopard prints, sequins and embroidery, while fabrics include luxurious silk, tough leather and soft cashmere. Designed to be easy to wear, Whistles encapsulates the 'thrown together' look and while each piece works well independently, they can also be easily combined for a cool, modern style.
With a wide range of accessories, including belts, tights and sunglasses, Whistles manages to cater for every style and occasion. Structured fedora hats and felted caps feature alongside cashmere, wool and silk scarves, while the bags are in a class of their own; made from the finest leather, and featuring quirky texture and print details, there's a bag to take you from the workplace to the bar and beyond.
