I have decided to write a review of what I think are 10 of the best Sega Master System games of all time.  Hopefully, any buyers of the Classic 8-bit Master System will be able to use this guide to buy a selection of gems that the Master System offers.  The following games are in no specific order as I am of the opinion that they each offer something different to the player.

1. Alex Kidd in Miracle World

Alex Kidd in Miracle World was one of the built-in games to come with the Master System II console.  As such, the game in cartridge version is rare.  This is one of the best platform games for the Master System and offers varieties of gameplay and puzzles to solve in order to complete the game.  This was the first game I played on the Master System and remains one of my favourites.

2. Fantastic Dizzy

The Dizzy series first originated in the late eighties and was one of my favourite series for the Sinclair Spectrum.  Fantastic Dizzy on the Master System does not fail to disappoint.  The user controls Dizzy - an egg - that has to interact with characters, collect objects and solve puzzles to complete the game.  I would highly recommend this game as a must of any Master System Collection!

3. Teddy Boy

Teddy Boy is a game that is often missed off the radar in reviews.  It is a game that can be picked up cheaply off ebay and offers hours of fun.  The brightly coloured levels are a gem to watch and the highly addictive gameplay will keep you coming back for more.  Various enemies are included which, when shot, turn into little balls that you have to collect.  Each of the levels are small but they appear larger as they wrap around themselves.  A great game for any player!

4. Mickey Mouse - Castle of Illusion

Mickey Mouse - Castle of Illusion is such a lovely colourful game that you can't help but enjoy it.  The various levels have wonderfully animated baddies from Chocolate Bars to Treasure Chests.  Your aim is to save Minnie from the evil witch Mizrabel by collecting seven gems, obtained by defeating the various end-of-level baddies throughout the game.  A lovely game that does not fail to impress.

5. Ghouls 'n' Ghosts

The player controls Arthur - the Knight - on his quest to restore souls.  This is a great game and one of my personal favourites!  A difficult game to master as you make your way through graveyards, caves and villages.  Addictive gameplay at it's best!

6. Fantasy Zone

Fantasy Zone is just that - a fantastic colourful fantasy in which you control your ship through various levels each with their own boss.  What sets this game apart is the colourful cartoons and the weapon and speed upgrades that you can collect throughout.  Just lovely!

7. Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic has to be included in the line up of the greatest Master System games - and with good reason.  The gameplay with all of the Sonic titles is excellent and this one is no exception.  A must-have in your collection.

8. R-Type

The greatest shooter on the Master System with no exception.  Excellent control, great graphics and a host of beautiful weapon upgrades to keep you going.  Combine this with a range of massive and creative bosses and you have an unbeatable combination! Buy it!

9. Psycho Fox

A marvellous game that's a rare find!  Psycho Fox has great playability, you can transform your fox into other animals including a hippo, monkey, or tiger - each with it's own special ability.  Seven levels in all, each with an end-of-level boss and a bonus game - enjoy!

10. Gauntlet

Gauntlet is a multi-player game with 512 levels.  It is ridiculously hard and the best I ever managed was about level 30.  Still, it is great for 2 player game fun.  The aim of the game is to get through each level by fighting your way through various monsters and barriers and finding the exit.  You can choose between four characters - a muscle bound warrior, an elf, a wizard, or a valkyrie.

So there you have it - ten of the best games for the Sega Master System.  I would have loved to put a few more on but as I can only choose ten I have had to make some tough decisions.  Still I feel that there are a few more games that deserve recognition so I have included a few games titles below for your information:

- Wonderboy III - The Dragon's Trap

- California Games

- Fantasy Zone II

- Sonic 2

- Golden Axe

Happy gaming!
