It's taken the high street a long time to come round to the idea that real women have real curves. For those of us blessed with a bootylicious figure, buying new clobber used to mean a slog around the shops looking for anything – ANYTHING – over a size 14.

Luckily things have now moved on, with online ranges in particular offering a wide choice for women with curves. That said, every plus-size woman will still relate to these all-too-familiar shopping struggles...

1. Being Compared to an Hourglass Isn't All That

You're not quite sure why curvy bodies are compared to objects used to time cooking eggs, and to be frank, you don't really like it. It's the ultimate hyperbole, and not in a good way.

2. Jeans. Without. Stretch.

The less said, the better. Who still thinks these denim monsters are an acceptable part of any wardrobe? Bring on the elastic!

3. Summer = Chafing

Sticky weather and curvy thighs don't really go well together. The result of walking all day and wearing a dress in the heat can be some seriously sore inner legs. Hack: Spray a little dry shampoo between y our thighs (carefully, of course) to keep painful red marks at bay all day. Trust us, it works!

4. And While We're On the Subject: RIP To All the Jeans That Have Been a Cause of Chafing

Even if you're lucky enough to find that elusive pair of perfect jeans, chances are they'll only last a few months before you get holes at the top of your thighs. Better stock up on three pairs, just in case...

5. You Spend Your Life Wondering Why Your Favourite Shop Can't Just Make That Bigger?

Is it really that difficult for high street stores to make sizes above a 16? And why, when shops do step out of their slim comfort zone, must this range be labelled differently – and in a whole new section of the shop? Less of the segregation please, shop bosses.

6. Winter Boots Are a No-No

Anything above an ankle boot can be tricky to pull off if you've got curvy calves, so praise the lord that ankle-length styles are the favourite for autumn/winter 2016. No more zip fights in the morning!

7. Sleeves, Despite Popular Opinion, Are Not Always Your Friend

Not only do sleeves make you sweat through the summer, it's also difficult to find ones that actually fit without feeling restrictive. We're sticking to sleeveless dresses, thanks.

8. A Kaftan/Shirt Dress is Your Go-To

In summer, wear a kaftan over a bikini. In winter, wear it over (stretch) jeans and a T-shirt. You owe a lot to whoever invented these loose-fitting garments from the Gods.

9. When People Say They Have 'Nothing To Wear', They Don't Know the Half of It

Oh, poor you. Why don't you just nip to your local shopping centre and pick something up? And no, we're not bitter at all…

10. 'Basics' Are Surprisingly Difficult To Find

Sometimes, you just want a plain white T-shirt in soft cotton, or an everyday shirt that doesn't pull across your chest or stomach. And these basic buys are depressingly difficult to find, since plus-size ranges tend to focus on this season's trends.

11. No Matter How 'Plus Size' the Model, It Still Won't Look Like That On You

A struggle shared by the majority of the female population. Sure, plus-size models may technically be a size 16 or above, but they're also perfectly proportioned and fit into everything in their size beautifully. Sigh.

12. On the Plus Side, You Never Buy 'For the Sake of It'
