The first thing to note is where rare book collecting is concerned, is that 'old' doesn't necessarily mean 'rare', and on the same hand 'new' doesn't mean 'bargain'. A general rule of thumb is; the more limited the supply, and the better the condition of the book the more valuable it becomes.

Buy the best possible copy you can afford. Develop a relationship with your supplier, who will inform you when new stock comes arrives that might interest you.
