Aromatherapy is a way of healing the mind, body and spirit using essential oils, or essences.  These are highly concentrated extractions from various parts of aromatic plants and trees.  They have many properties between them to help heal the person as a whole.  As they have such a tiny molecular structure, when applied to the skin they can be absorbed directly into the bloodstream and carried to the parts of the body where they are needed.  They also reach the bloodstream through inhalation.

It is important to address the causes of illness be they physical, psychological or emotional, as that is the approach of holistic healing. By using aromatherapy as a compliment to a healthy lifestyle and also other forms of treatment the body can activate its own self healing ability.

There are many different essential oils, but it is not necessary to have every single one.  Just a few that appeal to you are all that are needed.  They are best stored in a dark bottle and kept in a cool, dark place.  Ideally in a dark box or container.

Lavender is a very useful oil, as well as having a very pleasant aroma, it blends well with many other oils and has many beneficial properties, such as: analgesic, antidepressant, antiseptic, deodorant, hypotensive, insecticidal and sedative to name just a few!!  Tea Tree is a very useful oil to have in the house, but only blends with a limited number of oils.  It has many beneficial properties: antiseptic, antibiotic, antiviral, fungicidal, parasiticidal and immunostimulant!

Essential oils should not be taken internally, and care should be taken as certain oils have contraindications to certain health conditions.  It is a good idea to get hold of a booklet which outlines main oils and their uses; it will tell you which ones should not be used in certain circumstances.  A good example is during pregnancy; an expectant mother should be very careful before using an oil, either check with a qualified aromatherapist or consult a reliable text.
