Globe Shape LED Light Buying Guide

When redecorating, renovating, or just replacing that bulb, it's always good to review the lighting options used to illumunate the home. One type of lighting to consider is LED lighting.

LED Lights

There are many reasons to choose LED lights over other lights. These reasons include factors such as robustness, lower energy consumption, cheaper utility bills, and green credentials with relation to waste disposal. Other advantages concern their versatility when it comes to size, brightness, and different colours, which make them suitable for a wide range of applications. LED lights are used in aviation, advertising, traffic lights, and many other commercial and industrial fields. They are becoming increasingly used in domestic environments where they are often used to create stunning decorative effects. Electroluminescence was discovered in 1907 and the first LED light reportedly invented in 1927. However, it was not until 1961 that the infrared LED was patented. The first LED developed to emit light in the visible spectrum was the red LED in 1962. The yellow LED was developed in 1972. Advances in brightness and efficiency were made throughout the 1970s and beyond. LEDs began to be used in commercial applications such as laboratory equipment and electronics, followed by products such as televisions, telephones and calculators. Other colours were also developed. The first high brightness blue LED light was created in 1994 and this quickly led to the creation of the white LED light. The white LED light combined yellow light with blue. It was this development that led to the use of LED lights for illumination.

Advantages of LED Lights

LED lights are increasingly replacing fluorescent and halogen bulbs due to their many superior properties. Advantages of LED lights include their durability and long life, with bulbs lasting up to 50000 hours. They are also extremely energy efficient, resulting in lower electricity bills and lower carbon emissions. The relationship between energy efficiency and brightness of light bulbs can be measured by a term known as luminous efficacy and is shown for different type of bulb in the table below. Lumens refer to the apparent quantity of light. Higher lumen (lm) to watts (W) ratios equate to a higher luminous efficacy.

30 – 90 lm/W

Fairly high luminous efficacy

45 – 75 lm/W

Moderate luminous efficacy

16 – 24 lm/W

Fairly low luminous efficacy

12.5 – 17.5 lm/W

Fairly low luminous efficacy

LED lights are also available in a wide range of styles and colours, and can be used in various types of lighting fixtures. As well as different colours, they are available in varying tones of white light. Because of their small size, with 3 mm bulbs available, they can be used in areas where larger bulbs would not fit. They can be safely used close to paintings or other valuable objects as they will not cause harm due to lightening or hot temperatures.

Shapes of LED Lights

There is a wide range of shapes and sizes of LED lights, which is indicated by the name consisting of one to three letters, a number and sometimes another letter. The letters refer to their shape and include standard or arbitrary (A), bulged (B), candle (C), pear (P), parabolic aluminium reflector (PAR) and tubular (T). The number and letter at the end refer to the bulb’s diameter and length. Globe (G) is one of the more popular shapes and, as the name suggests, they are spherical in form.

Choosing Globe Shape LED Lights

After having decided on LED lights, narrowing down the options may seem like a real task. Consider the follwoing factors before making the final choice.

Globe shape LED bulbs can be used to replace other bulbs and there is no need to replace fixtures. Globe shape bulbs cast light in all directions for full illumination. They can be placed in light fixtures either on the ceiling or on the walls to provide background lighting. Because LED lights provide instant brightness and high light levels they are ideally suited to this purpose, including in larger rooms. Globe shape LED lights can also be used in bedside lamps and standard lamps for accent lighting, which creates more interesting effects than ambient lighting. They can also be used in reading lamps directed in a particular area for focused light. This type of lighting is known as task lighting.

Bulb Brightness

The brightness level varies between bulbs. Brightness can be determined from the bulb’s lumens (lm) or its watts (W). Both of these should be clearly stated in the product description and on the packaging. 6W to 9W LED bulbs give softer light approximately equivalent to a 50W to 60W incandescent bulb. 10W to 13W LED lights give brighter light roughly equivalent to a 100W incandescent bulb. The brightness of the bulb will also depend upon bulb quality. Bear in mind that cheaper bulbs are often lower quality and may not be as long lasting. It is often worth paying more for a higher quality bulb which will provide more light for longer. The effect of the bulb will also be determined by its location. Shaded and opaque lampshades will shield the bulb, casting a softer and more diffused light. Bulbs put into a reading lamp will provide more intense and focused light to where it is required. Bulb brightness is affected by its colour, with coloured bulbs casting less bright light. Warm white bulbs are less bright than cool white lights.

Bulb Colour

There are many different colours of globe shape LED lights, including white, blue, green, red, orange, and yellow. Different colours are suitable for decorative effects in the home and have various commercial and industrial effects. Blue light has a relaxing effect and has been shown in some cases to cause less eye strain. Reds, oranges, and yellows create a warm, cosy environment. White is divided into warm white and cool white. Warm white is a softer and more yellowish light, whereas cool white is a brighter, sharper and more bluish white. The range of different whites along the scale from reddish to bluish are described using a measurement known as the correlated colour temperature (CCT). CCT utilises the Kelvin temperature scale and values are given in kelvins (K). Most domestic settings use warm white, which has a typical value of around 2700K. Some domestic settings might call for bluer tones, but cool white is more generally used in commercial environments. Cool white has a typical value of around 5000K. It is generally considered preferable to stick with one type of colour rather than mixing the two. The colour rendering index (CRI) is another scale used to describe light colour quality. It is a measure of how well the light enables humans to perceive colours accurately i.e. in natural daylight. Incandescent bulbs score highly on the index and LED lights can also score highly. Some of the highest LED lights are warm white bulbs.

Other Features

Other features to consider include the type of base. The available bases are Edison screw, bayonet, or pin sockets. These follow a naming convention referring to the type and diameter of the base. For example, E27 describes a bulb that has an Edison screw base with a 27 mm diameter. Another consideration is whether the bulbs are required to be dimmable. Standard LED bulbs are not dimmable, but there are many models that are. They may be more expensive, but it is worth deciding at the outset if this feature is required. Other LED lights can be remote controlled, offering a new level of convenience and versatility. Look for bulbs that come with certification, a warranty and/or with high seller feedback for higher trust in a purchase.

Find Globe LED Bulbs on eBay

There are two basic ways to search for globe LED bulbs on eBay. The first is to use the tabs to the left hand side of the screen. Follow the links for Home & Garden and then Lighting under Furniture & Living. Under Categories click on Light Bulbs and under Type select LED. Globe shape LED lights can be found by scrolling down to Shape and selecting Globe. The second way to find globe LED bulbs is to type “globe shape LED light” or “globe shape LED bulb” into the search field at the top of the screen.

LED lights are being increasingly used in domestic environments due to their many advantages over other light bulbs. LED light bulbs are more durable and longer lasting. They are also more energy efficient and economical to run. They are sold in many styles, colours, and sizes, making them extremely versatile. Warm white bulbs give a warm, yellowish type of light similar to incandescent bulbs, while cool white bulbs are sharper and more bluish. Globe shape LED lights cast a wide angle of light and are perfect for general purposes as well as accent lighting and task lighting. They are sold in varying brightness levels, and brightness will also be affected by their location and the quality of the bulb. Other factors to consider are the colour rendering index (CRI), the type of base and special features such as dimmers or remote controls. Globe shape LED lights are extremely versatile and can be used to enhance lighting in the contemporary home.
