I have tried to give simple explanations to common abbreviations and terms used by sellers of computers and associated items.
I do not claim the list is comprehensive, definitive or totally error free.
I realise this guide is incomplete. I will update it as time permits.
AGP Accelerated Graphics Port a high-speed channel for attaching a graphics card to assist the acceleration of 3D computer graphics. Since 2004 has been replaced by PCI Express.
AMD Advanced Micro Devices Inc. An US multinational semiconductor company based in Sunnyvale, California, that develops computer processors and related technologies.
BUS A subsystem that transfers data between components inside a computer or between computers.
Chipset A set of chips on the motherboard, one part (Northbridge) links the CPU to memory and graphics controllers, the other (Southbridge) contains integrated peripherals such as Ethernet, USB, and audio devices.
CPU Central Processing Unit operates by executing a sequence of stored instructions called a program. The operation of an instruction normally uses four steps: fetch, decode, execute, and writeback.
FSB Front Side Bus. The data transfer bus that carries information between the CPU and the Northbridge of the Motherboard.
GHz See Hertz (Hz)
Hz The hertz is the International System of Units (SI) base unit of frequency. Multiples are kHz (kilohertz, 103 Hz), MHz (megahertz, 106 Hz), GHz See Hertz (Hz)
ICH7 The I/O Controller Hub is Intel’s term for the Southbridge part of the Chipset
Intel Intel Corporation is the world's largest semiconductor company and the inventor of the x86 series of microprocessors used in the original IBM PC.
Kernel In computer science, the central component of most computer operating systems responsible for managing the system's resources.
KHz See Hertz (Hz)
Labelflash™ An optical disk labeling system from the YAMAHA CORPORATION and FUJI FILM Corporation
MB The term megabyte is ambiguous because it is commonly used to mean either 10002 (1,000,000) bytes or 10242 (1,048,576) bytes. From 2008 standards authorities require the use of megabyte to describe strictly 10002 bytes.
MHz See Hertz (Hz)
MiB A mebibyte (mega binary byte) is a unit of information or computer storage = 10242 bytes.
Northbridge Also known as the memory controller hub (MCH) in Intel systems, the Northbridge is traditionally one of the two chips in the core logic chipset on a PC motherboard, and typically handles communications among the CPU, RAM, AGP or PCI Express, and the Southbridge. Some Northbridge’s also contain integrated video controllers, which are also known as a Graphics and Memory Controller Hub (GMCH) in Intel systems.
OS Operating System software provides a host environment for application programs. Microsoft Windows is the most common for PCs, another being Linux.
PC Personal Computer. One operated directly by the end user.
PCI Peripheral Component Interconnect which specifies a bus for attaching peripheral devices to a motherboard.
PCI-E Abbreviation of PCI Express
PCIe Abbreviation of PCI Express
PCI Express Designed by Intel to replace the PCI expansion bus and the AGP graphics card interface, it is structured around point-to-point serial links called lanes with increased bandwidth giving better performance.
S.M.A.R.T. Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology is a monitoring system for computer hard disks to detect and report on various indicators of reliability in the hope of anticipating failures.
