I have just read a guide that stated that Recorded Delivery (now called Signed For) ensures that items get delivered quicker. This is untrue. Signed For service is processed exactly the same as First or Second class and is not seperated. Also, First Class is a 1-2 day service, not (as many people believe) a next day service. Signed For service allows you to obtain a signature upon delivery and you get a certificate of posting with the receipt. You can check delivery via the Royal Mail website with the tracking number. You can also get a copy of the signature (for an extra fee). Signed For does not offer extra compensation, only up to the basic maximum for First & Second class.
If you have valuable items, need compensation for loss or damage above the basic for First & Second Class or need guaranteed next day delivery, you need to choose Special Delivery. This is processed seperately from other mail and (unlike Signed For) is trackable throughout processing. There are limitations to this service so check RM's website.
I hope this clears any confusion over what Signed For can & can't do.
