Headlight upgrades simply explained.

There are two basic types: standard bulb upgrades and HID upgrades.

The standards bulb types can be normal halogen or xenon - neither will give an HID white effect - no matter what the seller says.

HID upgrades can come as a simple kit which includes" ballast" to power the discharge lamps (bulbs) at high voltage - they will have the desired effect but no self-levelling mechanism (although people still use them).

The full HID upgrade kit can be obtained but a much greater cost and requiring a lot more work. Legally, HID headlamps require motors and sensors fitted to adjust the level of the beams automatically and also headlamp washers to keep the lenses clean.

The cheap kits from China do work but there varying reports of quality (even causing damage) which you might want to balance against the need to keep in budget.
