How to Install Sky+

A Sky+ system can be an important addition to the entertainment system in a household. The Sky+ system can be more expensive if installation services for the various components are purchased as part of the package. When purchasing Sky+, consumers can generate savings by choosing to perform the installation of the components by themselves. When choosing a home installation solution, there are some simple steps that need to be followed in order to avoid the pitfalls associated with installing something as technical as Sky+.

Purchasing individual hardware components from the marketplace can also result in cost savings. Satellite dishes and LNB devices can all be purchased, and one can achieve savings when armed with the technical details to complete an effective installation.

eBay offers the modern shopper a reliable platform to find the components and tools necessary to install a Sky+ satellite TV system. Choosing items from the large selection of sellers on eBay means that a shopper can find the right suppliers and products at competitive prices from the comfort of the home.

Installing a Satellite Dish for Sky+

For a TV to be able to receive a satellite signal, it is necessary to convert that signal from high range microwaves to a signal that can be transmitted across coaxial cable. This is done using a satellite dish to capture the signal and a Low Noise Block-downconverter (LNB) to perform the signal conversion. The LNB then transmits the signal across coaxial cable to the set-top box.

Upgrading an Existing Dish

Satellite dishes that have been used with older technology are capable of delivering signals for Sky+ television, provided the correct LNB and cabling are in place. A Sky+ LNB delivers two coaxial cable outputs, so if the existing satellite dish only has one cable, a second one needs to be installed across the same cable run. A new twin LNB that is necessary to for Sky+ can easily be found on eBay.

Replacing an old LNB involves several key steps:

Step 1

Check the current levels of signals the satellite dish is receiving. This is useful to check how accurately the new Sky+ signal is being received. The signal strength should be written down.

Step 2

Check the angle at which the current LNB is fitted. It might be at a "twenty to the hour" skew. The new LNB should be fitted at the same angle.

Step 3

Tighten all fixing screws and bolts on the dish. The new LNB can be slightly heavier than the old one, and the dish needs to be secured so that it is not repositioned by the additional weight.

Step 4

Remove the old LNB. This may be connected in one of three ways: a plastic channel that fits over the arm and holds it in place, a spigot that holds it in place, or a rubber boot that holds the cables and LNB in place. This requires sliding down the coaxial cable to reveal the cable connector which should be unscrewed.

Step 5

Fit the new LNB and secure with the mechanism it is supplied with.

Step 6

Attach the old coaxial cable and the new one to the two connectors.

Step 7

Cover with waterproof covers or with self-amalgamating tape.

Installing a New Satellite Dish

Installing a new satellite dish is a routine procedure. Many organisations can provide the service; however, self-installation is a simple way to save money, provided some simple technical details are followed. A satellite meter may also be required to monitor the satellite signal and fine-tune the position of the dish to ensure a strong signal. Satellite meters are available online from platforms such as eBay.

It is also important to know the position of the satellite that broadcasts the Sky+ signal so that the correct side of the building can be used to mount the satellite dish. Sky transmits from the Astra 28.E satellite. There are several ways of locating the satellite. The first is to look to see where other satellite dishes are pointing in the immediate area. This gives a general idea, which can then be fine-tuned using a satellite meter. Some websites also offer helpful hints, and there are a number of useful smartphone apps that are readily available.

Armed with the directional details for the Sky satellite, the procedure to install a new satellite dish is involves the following steps:

Step 1

Decide which wall of the building is ideally suited to allow the satellite dish to see the Astra satellite.

Step 2

Drill through the wall from the outside in, making sure that the outer hole is lower than the inner hole to prevent water ingress.

Step 3

Mount the fixing bracket to the exterior wall for securing the satellite dish to the building.

Step 4

Ensure the fixing bracket is mounted level to the surface. A simple spirit level can help here.

Step 5

Mount the satellite dish on the fixing bracket, but do not completely tighten fixing bolts; they need to be loose enough to allow the dish to be moved for fine tuning later.

Step 6

Connect the two coaxial cables to the LNB.

Step 7

Adjust the skew of the LNB and the position of the satellite dish to provide a strong signal. The signal strength can be checked using a satellite meter.

Step 8

Tighten all bolts and fixing screws

Step 9

Recheck the signal strength to ensure no movement took place during final tightening.

Step 10

Run both coaxial cables through the property to the location of the television set.

Installing a Sky+ Set-Top Box

Connecting a Sky+ box is a relatively simple procedure. There are four cables that need to be connected to the box in order for it to function correctly.

Scart Cable

The scart cable connects the Sky+ Box to the TV set. There are two scart connectors on the rear of the Sky+ box. One is labelled "VCR" and the other labelled "TV", and both connect the Sky+ box to the television set. The TV socket is an active socket and, when connected to the TV, it ensures that the TV automatically switches to the correct mode for viewing Sky+, averting the need to manually select the correct mode using the TV remote.

Two Coaxial Cables

The twin coaxial cable feeds from the satellite dish should be connected tightly to the two sockets marked Input 1 and Input 2. Should only one cable be available, that cable should be connected to Input 1. The Sky+ box can work with one cable connected to Input 1. There is sufficient functionality to view programmes, to record them and to freeze and rewind them. Input 2 allows programmes other than the one being watched to be recorded. If a single cable is connected to Input 2 alone, there can be no functionality from the Sky+ box.

Power Cable

The power cable is delivered with a three-pin plug attached. With the power switch turned off, the power cable can be inserted into the socket at the rear of the Sky+ box. It does not matter which orientation is used to insert the socket at the back of the box, and the three pins on the wall plug ensure that can only be inserted in the correct position.

Final Configuration and Activation

Once the power cable is connected, switching the power on can automatically start a download of the software via the satellite link. During the download, the power button displays in red. Failure to start the software download can indicate that the satellite dish is not positioned accurately. Once the power button stops displaying red, the software download is complete. The Sky+ card and Sky+ box now need to be "paired" together to provide the services that have been purchased. This is done by contacting the Sky customer care number on the back of the card. Once paired, the Sky+ installation is complete.

Deciding to install a Sky+ system can be the first step on a path of electronic do-it-yourself projects. Making a wise equipment purchase can save considerable amounts of money, provided installation routines are followed correctly. A series of simply laid out instructions and some simple tools are all that is required to establish confidence in self installation. eBay is a great resource that can make the purchase of the components of a Sky+ system as well as the tools for installation easier.

Shopping for technical goods can be daunting, but the detailed item descriptions provide plenty of helpful information. Should the information not be enough to enable a shopper to make a decision, the eBay messaging facility can be used through which specific questions can be sent to the seller. eBay also provides the shopper with additional tools to determine how good a particular seller is. Feedback posted for each seller is available for review. With the help of eBay’s tools, one can make a purchase with the confidence that one is dealing with a seller of repute to get the right product delivered in a timely manner.
