How to Use Permanent Hair Dye Correctly

Whether you have dreams of becoming a Marilyn Monroe blonde or are considering going dark, permanent hair dye can give you the colour you want with a minimum of fuss. Choosing the correct dye, preparing your hair, and using the right tools are the keys to a great new permanent colour. Once you have selected the colour, following the steps to brilliant hair colour is easy.

Prepare Your Hair

Wash your hair one or two days before adding colour. This allows the natural oils in your hair to develop, which helps the dye bind to the hair shafts.

Protect Your Skin and Surfaces

Blotches of colour on your carpet, favourite shirt, bathroom floor, or sink surrounds are unsightly and can be difficult, if not impossible, to remove. Cover any surface that could be dye stained with newspaper.Wear an old shirt or wrap an old towel around your body. Put an old towel around your shoulders and secure it with a safety pin or clip at the front. Protect the skin on your ears, forehead, face, and neck by applying petroleum jelly or conditioner around those areas. Wear your gloves during the entire process to protect them from stains as well.

Perform an Elbow and Strand Test

Mix a small amount of the dye and apply a 2.5-centimetre patch on the inside of your elbow. Wait 24 hours. If you do not have a reaction, do the strand test. Mix a small amount of the dye, according to the manufacturer's directions, and apply it to a strand of hair about 1.5 cm wide behind the ear or in another less noticeable place. Allow the colour to develop according to the manufacturer's instructions, then remove the dye and check the colour. If you like the colour, you can apply the dye to your entire head of hair.

Apply the Colour Mixture

Mix the rest of the dye. When mixing the dye, use a bowl and a brush for the best results. Using a comb, separate your hair into four sections and use clips to hold the sections apart. Apply the colour to your hair in sections. Begin adding colour at the roots, working to the ends. Once you have applied the colour to all the hair, set a timer to the exact amount of time recommended in the instructions.

Rinse and Condition Your Hair

Either in the shower or over the sink, rinse the colour out of your hair. Continue to rinse until the water runs clear. Apply the conditioner supplied with the colour kit to your hair and rub it in thoroughly. Leave on for several minutes and then rinse thoroughly. If possible, allow your hair to air dry to help set the colour and increase the shine. Do not wash your hair for at least 24 to 48 hours.
