How to choose Jet / Nozzle for your gas appliance

Many people has to change the gas type of the gas appliance he's using by various reasons. Mostly from natural gas (G20 or G25) to LPG (liquid propane gas; G30/G31). For example he's living in an area where natural gas is not avaible, or the appliance is used far away from the house and it would be expensive to link it to the gas network and so on.

To do this, the appliances nozzles / jets has to be changed to a similar one, but with a smaller orifice size. That's because natural gas operates at a lower pressure than LPG, and you have to compensate for the pressure change to avoid damage.
If you operate your appliance with LPG, and you don't change the jets, it will burn with a giant flame and makes a lot of soot.

The best way to choose the correct sized jets is to check the user's manual of your appliance, where you can find a nozzle chart. In the chart, you can find the sizes you need for different types of gas. The manufacturer always gives the size in a unit "1/100mm". If it says "71" than it means "71/100mm" equal to 0.71mm. This is the diameter of the hole found on the top of the nozzle, called orifice size.

If you don't own a user's manual, you should go online and search for one by the model number of the appliance, or call the manufacturer/retailer.

If all this fails, you don't have to worry! The orifice size can be calculated by the natural gas size, and that is stamped in to the current natural gas nozzle, but if you can, you should always rely on the chart given by the manufacturer.

The nozzles are found in the center of the burner, and it is visible when you remove the burner cap and the burner crown.

But the orifice size is just one of the two main specifics of the nozzle you need! You have to check the thread size of the nozzle in order to be able to fit into your appliance. Don't worry, this is easy. Almost all the nozzles come with a 6x0.75mm thread, which means it's 6mm in diameter (well, it's just nominally 6mm, if you measure, it should be 5.8mm) and a thread pitch of 0.75mm. This is called a fine thread. If you don't have the needed instruments for this measurement, you should just send be a picture of the nozzle from side view and I can tell you with ease.
