This guide's purpose is to bring more into the light, rights you may have to refunds from sellers for ANYTHING you buy from them over eBay, due to UK regulations concerning distance selling (regardless of whether that shark of a seller says refunds not available, or tries to say they'll only send a replacement!).
This only applies to BUSINESS sellers, that is, sellers who are an established business entity and earn enough to be considered a business, in the broadest sense, in the eyes of the taxman etc. It's usually pretty obvious which are and which aren't, almost any seller with a large inventory, 5 figure feedback and their own seperate online store is more than likely to have these obligations, but its worth checking out if they are just an individual or a business first, or at the point of payment/winning.
The good news is though, that these sellers are obliged by law (Distance Selling Regulations - applicable to any person trading indirectly with its customers as normal business practice, including internet sales ie ebay, door to door sales and so on) to provide a 7 day (after receipt of item) 'cooling off' period, in which the ungraded, undamaged item can be returned to the seller for a full refund, less the postage you had to pay to return it (but including the total amount paid to the seller originally).
Generally, it is easy to picture what condition an item has to be in to provide a refund. Ideally, the item would be unopened, unused, and in exactly the same condition as prior to recieving (still in any packaging that needed to be damaged to access item like shrink wrap plastic). The most quibble-free cases will always be those where the item is in factory new condition ready to be sold again, as these cause the least problem and can be sold again.
Clothes should have original tags on, and be in the same condition (clean, unworn except once to try on momentarily) as they would need to be to obtain a standard full refund from any clothes shop on the high streets.
SO REMEMBER. BUSINESSES ALWAYS HAVE TO OFFER YOU 7 DAYS NO MATTER WHAT TO RETURN AN AS NEW UNGRADED ITEM TO THEM, AND UPON RECIEVING THIS MUST PROVIDE A FULL REFUND (DISTANCE SELLING REGULATIONS).
