With so many choices available, cars lasting longer and due to financial reasons, many people are opting to buy used cars. In fact, many consumers contend that buying used cars can be the same as buying new ones if the buyer knows how to go about it. Taking some responsibility by preparing ahead is a very important step toward this goal.

1. Research...it is important to conduct some research first when shopping for a used cars. The buyer will be able to choose the make and model to buy, the kind of performance best suited for his needs and the price of these particular used cars on the market. Start shopping early. It can take several weeks to do all the research, test-drive, choose, check out financing if it is needed, insure, purchase, and register a car, whether it's new or used. By not taking your time you can easily be pressued into making unwise choises and bad decisions.

2. Check the cars history....The car’s history will provide the buyer some information regarding the repairs and problems of the car. If you can discover some history it would be to your advantage. In this way, the buyer will be able to compare one car from the other. Protection against buying a used car with costly, hidden problems would be a mechanic's inspection.

3. Check the safety features...An ideal car must possess safety features, whether it is old or new. Some accidents are more prevelant because safety features are not available on the car.

4. Buyers should be cautious about the documents that are included when buying used cars. Buyers should as much as possible be sure that the car is not stolen, there are no liens on the vehicle, and that the one who signed on the “Bill of Sale” is the true vendor and the possessor of the property. When buying from a reputable dealer, this should not be a problem.

5. Before buying a used car, inspect the overall condition of the car, check for any rust or damage; check the tires, etc. Buying a used car can be time consuming but the end result will give the buyer a lot of satisfaction knowing that he or she has purchased a good buy.
