Warning on recent purchases of mobile Motorola RAZR 3i

I recently purchased two examples of this mobile phone from two different suppliers, both of which broke down within a few days.  One was on ebay and one on a "buy it now",   Both were advertised as being New and supplied from the UK and, indeed, both were despatched from southern England.  However, it would appear from the sellers descriptions that both originated from the Far East.  Neither had a complete and original instruction book just a photo-copy with only one third of the pages of the original.  Unfortunately, although both appeared to be in new and excellent condition on arrival, both broke down within a few days.  On one the microphone failed and on the other the main screen blacked out permanently.

To the sellers credit they both refunded my money, the ebay seller especially was very quick, helpful and apologetic.  However, it has left me wondering whether old stock (or even copies?) of this good but elderly mobile are now being recycled into the market?
